I was relatively lucky in being blooded in terms of TV ad campaigns very early in my career at an agency in Manchester that was part of one of the world’s largest groups. Taught by a highly experienced creative director, I very quickly learned how to craft compelling stories in the extremely limited timeframes of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 60 second ads.
Over the past two decades, I have conceived and written scripts for a diverse range of clients across different sectors – from utility companies and FMCG brands to healthcare and fashion.
When scriptwriting, I digest the brief fully, probe the director, producer, agency, planner or client and look for the things that differentiate the product or service from its competition. I then go through several stages from conceiving the initial rough idea, drafting a script, then refining and tightening it to ensure it’s as effective as possible.
I don’t simply write the words spoken and suggest voiceover artists, I give a full narrative of the action – detailed enough for a visualiser to create a storyboard from. I also write with the latest Clearcast guidelines in mind. That way you know that the script I supply should be legal, decent and honest and not likely to get you into trouble with the powers that be. For radio, I go through the exact same process but describing the SFX instead of action.
Corporate and training videos are also something I write scripts for. These usually have the luxury of a longer duration and therefore more time to go into real detail, tell the full story demonstrate so much more.
